After years of heated debate over the use of tobacco on campus, UT announced Wednesday it will prohibit the use of tobacco products on all University property effective this month.

The UT Board of Regents approved the new tobacco policy on Monday, making UT the fourth institution under the UT System to implement a ban.

University spokeswoman Adrienne Howarth-Moore said people will be able to use tobacco in the 15 temporary designated areas on campus during the first year of implementation but will be required to adhere to the policy by Feb. 28, 2013. The policy prohibits the use of tobacco products on University-owned sidewalks, parking areas, walkways, attached parking structures and buildings. Tobacco will only be allowed at the temporary designated tobacco areas, and for educational or clinical purposes, fine arts productions, sponsored research and off-campus graduate housing facilities.

Don Ahern, who built Ahern Rentals Inc. from mom-and-pop beginnings into an equipment empire with $382 million of annual revenue, is running out of time to keep his company out of the hands of buyout billionaire Tom Gores.

Ahern has until April to present a reorganization plan after filing for bankruptcy in December. With the deadline approaching, Ahern Rentals’s $236.7 million of 9.25 percent second-lien notes are soaring as speculation mounts that Gores’s Platinum Equity LLC, which already runs equipment renter Maxim Crane Works LP, will use its stake in the debt to take over, according to two investors in the securities, who asked not to be identified because the negotiations are confidential.

The company’s plan to take advantage of a boom in Las Vegas backfired when construction slowed and profit plunged. Don Ahern, 58, doubled his company’s debt burden to $611.2 million from 2005 to 2008, using that cash to add about 16,500 lifts and other pieces of equipment. Now Ahern, whose father opened his first store in 1953, faces the prospect his company will become the latest of Gores’s more than 100 acquisitions.

“Creditors likely would gain control of the equity in a reorganization,” said Ed Mally, who tracks Ahern as head of institutional research at Imperial Capital LLC, an investment bank in New York. Knoxville, IL hopes to welcome a new business onto long vacant real estate.  The deal may come down to appraisal amount.  Controversy among council members will also need to be resolved before an agreement can be reached.

After withdrawing a bid for a property in Galesburg, St. Mary’s Square Living Center is considering developing part of its residential project in Knoxville.

Acting Mayor Bob Johnson said the non-profit center contacted him about two weeks ago asking about land at the corner of North Hebard and East Ann streets. The lot has been vacant for more than 40 years.

“It’s not doing us any good with a vacant lot. If this doesn’t work out for whatever reason, well, then we could market it for some other use,” he said.

City attorney Rob McCoy said the council can either accept sealed bids for the land or have the land appraised and sold by a real estate agent or city official. According to the Illinois Municipal code, the council must sell the area for at least 80 percent of the appraised amount.

Johnson said he hopes the land will be appraised by the March 5 City Council meeting. City Clerk Pam Eagle said officials have not determined which company will do it…Continue Reading

Robert Adams photographer his subject has been the American west: its vastness, its sparse beauty and its ecological fragility, was a pioneer of eco-conscious photography; he loves not only the empty, still prairie spaces of the American west but also the silence that echoes in them; he shoot in black and white, there is a subtle tonal quality to his pictures – a shading of light and shadow, and various gradations of the same – that would surely be lost in color.

In December 2011, having posted a list of his favourite photobooks of the year on his blog, the photographer Alec Soth received a response from another photographer, John Gossage. It read: “Is there one book on your list that changed you as an artist? One of these that allowed you to take something from it that you could use to move forward?”

The questions set Soth thinking. The more he thought, the more he realised the book that had influenced him most had not even made his end-of-year list. It was Prairie by Robert Adams, a revised reprint of a catalogue for an exhibition held in Denver Art Museum in 1978.

“Prairie is a simple book,” wrote Soth. “It is a small soft-cover with minimal design flourishes. And Adams’ early pictures match the book’s humility. We see barns, farmhouses, an old church. Some of the pictures brush up against small-town photo cliches. The truth is that if Adams’ name weren’t on the book, I’d probably never give it a chance. But this is an Adams book. And after 22 years I’ve learned that there is always more to learn from him.”

We had an architect and a structural engineer out here and everyone agreed that it made more sense – structurally and economically – to tear it down and start over.”
